Day 2: Windy Gyle to Byrness

Alarm set for 7 today. During the night I could here the wind howling through the trees, but our tent was totally sheltered and calm. Looking out in the morning it was cloudy with a low hanging must. Porridge for breakfast and cup of tea. This finished off all of our water, next stream on route was at Chew Green in 9 miles. The cloud was streaming through the trees, evaporating, and reforming further uphill so that we were in the clear.
As we started walking the mist closed in and our world shrunk.

Came across a wrecked tent on Windy Gyle – you need to select your campsite with care.

It took longer to arrive at the top than expected, the disorienting effect of the mist.

Simon carrying an archaeological site marker.
It starts raining, with high wind. After 5 miles we reached the shelter on Lamb Hill.

And here we catch up with Joshua again. Nice cosy shelter and we spend time chatting and avoiding going back out. But outside we must go – we have no water. The rain stops and eventually the mist lifts
The final 6 miles are actually very pleasant. The sky is very threatening but not actually raining.

Fantastic skies, sun streaming through gaps in the clouds.
Arrive in Byrness. The pub is not where I thought it would be, so an extra ¾ of a mile to the amazing Forest View Inn. This place is a gem. They allow you to camp in the garden. There is a shower. A drying room with superb spin dryer. They even have flip-flops to use while your boots are drying. And there are four real ales on offer, good food, and breakfast tomorrow. Joshua has his tent pitched next to ours, and two other PWers are also in residence. So a very friendly night with loads of chat
Distance walked today 14 miles
Total distance 29 miles

  1. Loving reading this. I remember being disappointed at being left behind 47 years ago for being too little to go. You're making it sound very tempting so far!
